Painter and pastel artist, Fortuney worked a great deal in southern France, notably Cagnes-sur-mer with Renoir. He was a renown maritime artist and realized large decorative panels for the Naval Minister. He executed numerous works illustrating Parisian life and its cafes painted directly from life and with the same spontaneity as the Impressionists. He is known for numerous Côte d'Azur landscape views (Sources Bénézit and Dictionnaire des petits maîtres by G. Schurr).
