Hydrogen table lighter, also known as a catalyst lighter or Döbereiner's lamp in cut-crystal and brass on a mahogany-veneered support fitted with a pigeon-hold and a drawer. Gilt bronze star ornaments.
(Minor accident on the rim).

The ignition system uses platinum as the catalyst and it is ignited by the action of hydrogen gas produced when a zinc plate reacts with sulfuric acid. This system was elaborated by Wolfgang Döbriner (1790 - 1849) circa 1825 and was a large success, notably in Germany and Russia.
