Large, bronze statuette with patina representing "Chactas en méditation sur le tombeau d'Atala" (Chactas in Meditation by Atala's tomb), seated in a rock.
Casting by Auguste Maximilien Delafontaine, marked.
Height: 43 cm (17 in.).
Duret, first grand prize of sculpture in 1823, exhibited in the Salons after 1831, became member of the Institut in 1843 and professor of Ecole des Beaux Arts in 1852.
He had an exclusive casting contract with the foundry Quesnel who ceded it to Delafontaine in 1850.
The original of this sculpture was exhibited at the Salon of 1836 and is displayed in the garden on the Palais des Arts, Lyon.
