Mantle clock with Boulle marquetry, Louis XV Period


Small fiddle-shaped mantle clock with Boulle marquetry of brass over tortoise shell. Rich gilt bronze ornamentation with most marked “crowned C”: foliaged scrollwork, stylized shells and cupids. Dial with Louis XV’s profile and twelve enameled platings. Movement signed Pothenot à Paris, thread suspension.

Louis XV Period.

Height: 59 cm (23-1/4 in.).

Minor accidents and losses, cupid statuette on dolphin added later.

“Crowned C” correlates to a tax payment on all objects with copper basing between March 1745-February 1749.
