Nāga Muchilinda in grey sandstone. Cambodia. Khmer Art from Bayon Period

Nāga Muchilinda in grey sandstone.

Upper part of the king of the naga Muchilinda multiheaded hood. The Shākyamuni Buddha meditates after the Wakening, seated under a tree, by a lake.
A violent storm rises and the rain quickly raises the waters. Conscious of the danger, the cobra (naga) Muchilinda leaves the lake, coils his rings around the body of Buddha and spreads out his hood with seven heads in a fan above him to shelter him from the rains. The Buddha was protected up until the rain stops and the floods disappear.
