Traveling, silver sun dial with compass. Octagonal plate engraved with three hour scales. Folding gnomon with compass designed as a bird. Reverse with city latitudes.
Signed Butterfield à Paris. Lily hallmark : 1717-1722.

Michel Butterfield (born in 1635) moved to France in 1677 as a mathematic toolmaker and named a pocket sun dial after himself.
His workshop was at faubourg St-Germain in 1678, "rue Neuve des fosse" and in 1697 "aux armes d'angleterre sur le quai des Morfundus".
