Spain, Talavera. Pair of earthenware vases


SPAIN, Talavera

Pair of covered earthenware vases atop small round pedestal fitted with two handles on which a vase is placed. Different polychrome decoration: for one a herd of bulls on one side and two bulls surrounding a palm tree with two distant houses on other side; for other a herd of bulls running in front of castle on one side and bull fighter stabbing a bull, distant bull and village on other side. Different stylized decoration on small pedestals. Rim and mid-section with openwork stylized flowers designed as potpourri. Button-shaped finials. Handles enhanced with stylized relief threading. Blue threading on handles and borders.

Marked underneath Lormez in manganese.

Height: 50 cm (19-1/2 in.) - Width: 25 cm (9-3/4 in.)

Chips, flaking and losses. Lids glued to vases. Numerous repairs: one with re-glued handles, repaired rim and re-glued lid finial; for other, re-glued pedestal, repaired handle and small re-glued vase.
