Suiseki (pierre de lettré)
Japan, 20th Century
Height : 20 cm (7.9in.) - Width : 17 cm (6.7in.)
With plinth : 21 cm (8.2 in.)
These Suiseki rocks or Gongshi in Chinese imitate the curiosities of nature, or miniaturize a mountain range, a cliff or a natural element. They are used in meditation. They are normally torn away from an rocky outcrop and are nature’s work without any human intervention. This is an interesting example as it is made from limestone with the veins making little folds. This limestone rock is relatively rare in Japan.
